A bright kitchen with the warmth of cherry wood

Renovating a 1960s home in Hackney

Stylist and trend forecaster Jane, and her husband Paul, wanted to replace their temporary second-hand kitchen with a modern kitchen design that would match their personal style, have the right functional details for them and complement the warm teak wood of their modern 1960s house.

The couple like to support businesses local to where they live in Hackney and had been on the look-out for a kitchen designer who Jane could have an in-depth technical conversation with about design. They already had our Lozi Bed and London Bedside tables, and when Lozi's founder Soroush came round himself to make adjustments they hit it off and began discussing ideas for the kitchen project.

Together we chose a palette based on cherry wood as a modern, more sustainable alternative to teak with a similar warmth, depth and richness, and combined it with white laminate, fluted glass and reflective surfaces to keep the space feeling modern, open and bright. As always this kitchen design is packed with clever functional details specific to the space and how their family like to live, wrapped in Lozi's signature clean lines and considered design details.

Crisp white laminate keeps the space feeling open and bright, while a double oven positioned side-by-side give the maximum counter space for food preparation.

Wrapping both the existing pantry and under-stairs storage in cherry plywood created an elegantly cohesive dining area on one side of the room.

The end of the upper cabinet would be visible through the window, so we added a curved end shelf to display books and plants attractively.

Shallow cabinets with fluted glass doors provide ample storage without crowding the space, and allow a glimpse of the crockery the couple have collected to match the period of the house.

An all-plywood carousel makes the most of the storage space in the corner kitchen unit, without compromising on the Lozi plywood aesthetic.

Every scrap of space was considered - there’s a bespoke trolley bin on castors for storing laundry tucked underneath the appliance shelf, and a slither of space under the boiler became the perfect home for chopping boards.
